About Gatwick Airport
Gatwick airport is the busiest single
runway airport in the world, the second largest airport in the UK and the sixth
busiest international airport in the world. Its development strategy for the
future focuses on the airport's expansion as a single runway, two terminal
airport, as it grows to handle around 40 million passengers a year, within the
next ten years.
Gatwick has two terminals, the North Terminal and the
South Terminal. The South Terminal is used by a variety of airlines while the
North Terminal is mainly used by British Airways. However, these are only broad
generalisations and it is essential to check which terminal a particular flight
departs from or arrives at. The two terminals are connected by a free "transit"
(light railway). The trip between the terminals takes about five minutes and
the service runs at the same interval. Anyone with time to spare can freely
take the transit and explore the other terminal. The South Terminal also has a
satellite building, connected via a similar transit, but since this is beyond
security it is only accessible by passengers.
Both terminals have
bureaux de change, ATMs, shops, duty-free outlets, restaurants and bars. There
is a post office in the South Terminal and an adjacent medical centre in
Ashdown House offering vaccinations. Shops include a music shop, a
pharmacy, several clothing shops, a bookshop, a shoe shop, a sports shop, a
gift shop, an electrical goods shop and a newsagents. Stamps are available from
bureaux de change and from newsagents. Baby changing rooms are present at the
airport and children's play areas are available free of charge for children
aged between two and six years of age. Follow this link to book and get
information on Gatwick airport
parking.
Left luggage facilities are available in both terminals.
The Internet Exchange internet café (e-mail:
ila@internet-exchange.co.uk) can be found in the International Departures
Lounge where passengers can gain internet access, send e-mails, play computer
games and receive computer training.
Special assistance is available
for disabled passengers and those with special needs. For passengers with
wheelchairs, there are ramps and/or lifts where necessary. Reserved seating is
provided in the check-in areas and in the international departures lounges.
Assistance is also available for drivers with special needs when parking at the
airport.
